How To Improve My Stage Presence?: Quick Menu
What Is The Meaning of Stage Presence?
We're often asked, "What Is Stage Presence". Performers with great stage presence exude charisma and confidence on stage and have a unique ability to captivate audiences and enhance the musical experience. While performers with great stage presence are confidence, this is only one part of it. A performer with amazing stage presence has the ability to make the audience feel especially connected to their show. Strong stage presence is achieved using a mix of body language and facial expressions, movement, and audience interaction.
A couple of examples of legendary performers with fantastic stage presence are Freddie Mercury, of the great rock band Queen, or Mick Jagger of the one-and-only Rolling Stones. Each of these musicians possess a rare ability to command the stage and connect with audiences. This is signature to their performances. This connection transforms simple concerts into a unforgettable experiences that live with fans indefinitely. Jagger's stage presence was so much that it even influenced the smash hit Moves Like Jagger, by modern pop icons, Maroon Five.

Why Is Stage Presence Important?
Stage presence is an important aspect of a live performance because it enhances the music and sets the tone for the concert-goers' experience. Performers with a high level of stage presence will electrify any venue, no matter how big or how small. They have the ability to put their entire being into a performance, no matter if there are 25 people or 25,000. On the contrary, performances that are lacking stage presence often feel dull and boring. During Toronto band program, our teachers emphasize why stage presence is important. Read on to see why.
Engaging the Audience
A great sounding band or artist is only one piece of the equation for delivering a fantastic live music experience. As we mentioned above, stage presence will help the audience to feel a strong connection to a particular performance. Keeping the audience engaged and forming this connect is often the difference between delivering a concert that is easily forgotten and a memorable one that will stick with the audience for their entire lives. As artists and musicians, our goal should be to connect with and move our audiences and developing your stage presence will help you do just that.
Enhancing the Performance
As mentioned above, a tight and polished band or artist is only one piece of the puzzle for artists who want to deliver mind-blowing live performances. Focusing on stage presence allows artists to add an extra layer to the music, making the performance more dynamic and thus, more memorable. Concert goers are there to listen to the music and songs that they love but also crave visual stimulation. For this reason, artists often tour with elaborate stage setups and mesmerizing light shows. Performers like James Brown were aware of this and became known for their awe-inspiring dance moves and choreography as well as their amazing music. The visual aspect of a live show is just as important as the music itself, and stage presence is key to delivering top-notch performances.
Building a Personal Brand
When you think of the "Moon Walk" dance, is there one artist who comes to your mind. You probably immediately thought, "Michael Jackson". When you think about a bandana wrapped around long blond hair, is there a rock star that comes to mind? You may have thought, "Axl Rose". Stage presence is an important component of a musician's personal brand and influences how they are remembered and perceived by fans and the industry. Artists with strong stage presence set themselves apart from the rest and are remembered for more than just their music. They are remembered for their larger-than-life personas and for their signature moves or look that differentiate from other performers. Having strong stage presence will allow you to stand out from the rest.
Tips to Improve Your Stage Presence
Are you an artist who wants to take your performances to the next level by stepping up your stage presence? It's an ongoing process that will take dedication, practice and self-awareness. Here are some of the tips that we give to students in our Toronto band program to help them perform like rockstars. Try them to make your performances even more memorable.
Confidence Is Key
No matter if you're a singer, instrumentalist, or dancer, confidence is a prerequisite for having great stage presence. Performers who exude confidence have a much easier time engaging and captivating audiences. Rehearse your setlist from start to end. This will allow you to feel prepared and increase your confidence on stage. Remember, a large part of having confidence is being prepared, so make sure you know exactly what you're going to do. For more on preparing a setlist and rehearsing, refer to our previous blog post on "Playing in a Band".
Use the Entire Stage
The best performers don’t confine themselves to one spot on stage. Make sure to move all around the stage. This will allow you to to engage with different sections of the audience, connecting with as many audience members as possible. Movement also makes for more dynamic and visually appealing performances. If you're a guitarist or bassist, you might consider using a wireless system which will give you the freedom to move anywhere you'd like without worrying about cables. Singers can consider using a wireless microphone, which offers the same advantages. Keyboardists can consider using a keytar which will allow for mobility and tends to wow audience members. Keytars can also be played using a wireless system to increase your mobility. Musicians who plan to use wireless systems should strongly consider using wireless in-ear-monitor (IEM) systems so that they will be able to clearly hear the band and themselves from anywhere on stage.

Make Eye Contact
Nothing establishes a connection with your audience quite like making eye contact. When performers make eye contact with audience members, it fosters a sense of involvement in the performance and makes audience members feel seen and appreciated. Some performers lack the confidence to make eye contact and feel a little bit intimidated. If this sounds like you, start by looking just above the heads of the audience members until you become more comfortable. Before you know it, you'll feel more at ease making direct eye contact. We guarantee you that this will be a powerful tool in engaging your audience.
Express Emotion Through Body Language
When you're on stage, try to express the emotions of the song with your body language. For example, take a powerful stance for a high energy song or a more subdued posture for a slow one, your body language should reflect the mood of the music. Jumping around and using gestures with more energy will compliment songs that have a high level intensity, while a ballad will pair better with more subtle and slow movements. Facial expressions are also a subtle but powerful way that you can use your body to express emotions. Try to find your own signature moves, like the moonwalk that we touched on earlier. They will help you create your identity as a performer and develop a strong brand.
Engage with the Audience
There are many ways that great performers are able to engage with the audience to form a strong connection. Between songs you can engage in carefully planned banter with the audience. Consider sharing stories, telling them how much it means that they've come to the show or ask them to sing along. Be careful with when and how much banter you engage in. While this type of interaction makes the performance more personal and memorable, it's important to find the balance and make sure that the audience is still able to enjoy the music and show. Some other great ideas for engaging banter include introducing the band members, explaining the inspiration behind a song, or even acknowledging specific audience members. Remember, a live performance is as much about the experience as it is about the music. Make sure to curate an amazing experience by creating unforgettable moments for members of your audience.
Dress the Part
A performer's wardrobe has a significant impact on their overall presence. Carefully select your attire to not only reflect your personal style, but also to suit the vibe of the performance. Study the greatest artists and try to identify what makes them look cool and unique. Find colour schemes that work for you, find accessories that make you feel cool and stand out. Choosing the outfits will enhance confidence and help you to develop and connect with your stage persona.
Record and Review Performances
Recording your performances is the absolute best way for you to see what works and what doesn’t. Carefully review the footage of your performance to identify areas for improvement and recognize what is really working. This self-assessment is an extremely valuable tool for continuous growth. Seeing your performance from the crowd's perspective will provide valuable insights into how you present yourself on stage and where you can enhance your stage presence. Consider watching the videos with close friends or family members and asking for their honest opinions about your outfit, the way you move, your facial expressions and more. Constructive feedback, especially from those who want nothing more than to see you succeed, will be crucial for you to hone in your craft.
