The four common types of saxophones are: 1. Alto The alto saxophone is the most popular of all and tends to be the easiest to start with. It's a great choice for children since it's small and relatively light. It is tuned to the key of E flat and can be heard in recordings by artists like John Coltrane, Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins.

Baritone: The baritone saxophone is the largest saxophone that is played commonly and like the alto, is tuned to E flat. It is an extremely large instrument and will therefore require the player to generate a lot of air. This, along with its weight, make it a demanding instrument. It is possible to start with baritone, however, most students beginning saxophone lessons in Toronto start with tenor or alto. 4. Soprano: The smallest and highest pitched saxophone that is commonly played.

The instrument, like the tenor, is in the key of B flat and comes with both a straight and curved body. Although the soprano is small, newer players will find it difficult to generate a nice tone and to play in tune.

There is not a set age that is best suited for all students to start with Toronto saxophone lessons. In our experience, around the age of 7-8 years old some children start to develop enough strength and dexterity to play the saxophone. We do occasionally see younger students succeed as well but most have trouble as the saxophone is a difficult instrument.

Typically, the sweet spot tends to be around 10 years old, however, the single most important factor to determine whether or not your child is ready for saxophone lessons in Toronto or online saxophone lessons is their interest level and attention span.

Ideally students should practice daily but life can understandably get busy. During practice time, it is always better to take pieces section by section, focusing on the difficult parts. Often, students will practice the entire song, repeating the same mistake over and over every time that section comes up.

This is ineffective and practice time should be spent correcting these mistakes instead of repeating them! Students who have graduated past the initial stages of their saxophone lessons in Toronto will be playing more complex pieces that demand finger dexterity and focus. Remember to learn the parts separately before trying to put them together. It is always better to practice (almost) daily for less time per session than it is to practice for 2 hours the day before your lesson.
