Alan
Piano
Alan began his musical journey at the age of three after hearing his mother play Debussy’s Arabesques. Since then, music has remained a lifelong passion and a central part of his identity. With over 20 years of musical experience and advanced performance certifications, Alan brings both depth and dedication to his teaching.
He holds DipABRSM and ATCL diplomas in Piano Performance, RCM Level 10 Piano (First Class Honours with Distinction), ARCT in Harmony and Counterpoint (First Class Honours), and certification in Teaching Elementary Piano from The Royal Conservatory of Music (94/100). His strong theoretical background allows him to specialize in harmony, counterpoint, and music analysis, helping students build true musical understanding alongside technical skill.
Alan’s teaching philosophy centres on cultivating joy, curiosity, and meaningful connection to music. While he has a strong foundation in classical repertoire, he welcomes students of all ages and musical interests. Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, combining technical development, musicianship, music literacy, and expressive freedom. He believes students should have the freedom to play the music they love while developing the skills to perform it confidently and artistically.
Beyond the piano bench, Alan encourages students to engage with music in a broader context — participating in choirs, orchestras, chamber music, and live performances. He integrates interdisciplinary references such as visual art and media to deepen students’ imaginative and emotional connection to music.
Alan also provides structured milestones to support growth, including preparation for RCM and ABRSM examinations, competitions, and performance opportunities. However, his primary goal is not simply achievement, but helping students develop self-reflection, analytical skills, and a lasting personal relationship with music.
Fluent in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Japanese, Alan works comfortably with diverse families and learning styles. His lessons aim to provide students with a rich, full musical experience — one that supports both artistic development and personal growth.
